How Text Donations Work: A Brief Overview



      1.

Contributor completes one-time setup

Before texting a donation for the first time, contributors complete a one-time online setup.

      2.

Contributor sends text message donation

To text a donation, contributors enter the keyword "Donate" (or "Give") followed by a dollar amount and a four digit PIN.

      3.

Donation processes

Vanco captures donation information in a secure, PCI Level 1 Compliant environment and electronically transmits funds and data for deposit.

      4.

Deposit occurs

Funds arrive in the organization's bank account via ACH credit.

      5.

Contributor receives confirmation

For contributors, text donations are confirmed by text, by email and also appear on their financial statements.

Q. Can contributors make one-time donations by text?
A. Yes, one time donations by text can be made anywhere, anytime from any cell phone or smart phone.

Q. Can contributors set up recurring donations by text?
A. No.

Q. Are all contributions set at a fixed dollar amount?
A. No. The contributor chooses the amount of the donation.

Q. How do contributors sign up?
A. Before texting a donation for the first time, a contributor must visit your website, locate the online giving page, then complete (or update) an online profile and check the "Opt In" box.

Q. What payment methods are available for giving by text?
A. Your organization designates which payment methods to offer contributors. You can offer credit card, debit card and direct debit.

Q. Are contributors assessed any special fees?
A. No, but normal text messaging fees from their cell phone carriers may apply.

Q. Where do contributors text their donations?
A. Upon completing a profile, a contributor receives both a text and an email along with instructions on how to text a donation.

Q. Is there a keyword?
A. Yes. Your organization will select either "Donate" or "Give" as the keyword for contributors to use when texting a donation.

Q. What distinguishes one text contributor from another?
A. The combination of a phone number and PIN number is unique to each contributor. These two items must always match perfectly.

Q. Can a contributor text a donation from a phone number that is different from the phone number in his or her profile?
A. No. The phone number and PIN number must match the phone number in the profile. A contributor that changes phone numbers must update his or her profile.

Q. Are donations ever charged to a contributor's mobile phone account?
A. No. Donations are made using the payment method specified in a contributor's profile. Phone carriers handle only the text message—not the financial transaction.

Q. How quickly are text donations deposited?
A. Text donations are electronically deposited into your organization's bank account as quickly as possible—within one business day for direct debit donations and within 2-4 business days for credit and debit card transactions.

Q. Can our organization send text messages to contributors?
A. Yes! You can use your text donation service to send outbound messages as well.
